About the Company:
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is the second largest transit system in the United States. They offer summer and year-long internship programs providing students with valuable work experience, professional development, and mentorship. Internships are project-based, and students work across various departments within the authority, guided by subject matter experts. Internships are part-time (15 hours/week) during the school year and full-time (40 hours/week) during the summer.
Job Description:
This year-long (2025-2026) Geographic Information Systems (GIS) internship is located within the Chief Planning and Innovation Officer department’s Strategic Planning unit at CTA Headquarters (567 W. Lake Street, Chicago, Illinois 60661). The intern will be involved in several key projects:
• Gathering and analyzing current census data: This involves working with census data already in a GIS format.
• Reviewing rail and bus routes: The intern will utilize the existing CTA GIS processes to examine and analyze CTA’s transportation network.
• Developing an updated census data analysis process: The intern will research and create a more efficient and effective method for analyzing census data.
• Creating a web application: The intern will design and build an online application to display updated census data for internal CTA staff and external stakeholders.
The internship requires on-site work at the CTA headquarters twice per week.
