About the Job
Position Title: Social Work Intern (Temporary)
Reports To: Coordinator: Psychological Services; Coordinator: School Social Work
Position Summary:
This temporary internship position offers an opportunity for graduate-level social work students to gain practical experience within an educational setting. The primary goal is to provide intensive counseling and social work services to identified students in need, both in-class and virtually, and their families. The intern will work under the supervision of a licensed social worker, focusing on reducing barriers to learning, providing therapeutic interventions, and connecting students and families with essential resources. Virtual experience may be required depending on the assignment, and bilingual/biliterate skills in a targeted language may also be necessary.
Internship Structure:
• Foundation/1st Year Students: 2 days/16 hours per week.
• Advanced/2nd Year Students: 3 days/24 hours per week.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
• Direct Student Services:
• Conduct individual therapy and/or group counseling sessions (in-person or virtually, especially for virtual academy students).
• Provide counseling and related services to students with disabilities as per their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or to general education students with parental consent.
• Interview students and family members to assess their needs.
• Intervention & Assessment:
• Collaborate with the social work field instructor and school-based student services staff (e.g., psychologist, counselor) to conduct suicide risk assessments, ensure child safety, communicate with families, and make referrals for ongoing services.
• Participate in crisis intervention services, including individual and school-wide prevention, intervention, and post-vention activities, and conduct threat determinations as needed.
• Collaboration & Consultation:
• Coordinate and collaborate with community agencies to provide student assistance.
• Consult with school staff to enhance student performance.
• Attend and participate in school-based team conferences, Section 504 multidisciplinary meetings, and IEP team meetings within required timelines.
• Family Support:
• Provide support and services to families experiencing personal and environmental challenges (e.g., poverty) that impact student progress.
• Conduct home visits if deemed appropriate and necessary.
• Professional Development & Documentation:
• Plan and conduct professional development trainings and individual consultations for teachers on social/emotional/behavioral support, behavior management, special education, child abuse, trauma-informed practices, and crisis prevention/intervention.
• Complete required documentation within timelines, including case notes, IEP documentation, Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs), and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Education:
• Currently enrolled in a regionally accredited college or university Graduate Program of Social Work required.
• Experience:
• None required.

• Bilingual/Biliterate: If assigned to a bilingual program, bilingual and biliterate in the targeted language (native or near-native proficiency) may be required.
