Your Role and Responsibilities as a Visual Designer

As a Visual Designer at IBM Research, you will be instrumental in communicating intent and meaning through compelling visual experiences. Your primary goal is to incite understanding and action, translating complex functions and information into emotionally resonant and desirable experiences. Your core responsibilities and skills will include:

  • Interpreting Research Insights: Building a deep understanding of subject matter to design experiences that resonate with users and the market.
  • Crafting Visual Experiences: Designing visuals that beautifully unify user/market insights with the robust IBM brand and design language.
  • Information Translation: Transforming structural information into visually compelling forms that enhance understanding and drive action.
  • Mastering Visual Communication: Communicating effectively through nuanced use of color, tone, layout, composition, imagery, typography, interactions, and motion.
  • Brand Cohesion: Unifying all visual elements to create a singular, consistent experience that embodies the IBM brand philosophy and tells a compelling narrative.
  • Accessibility Design: Ensuring all designs are inclusive and accessible to all users.
  • Concept Visualization: Bringing ideas to life through dynamic imagery and visual representations of concepts, adaptable to various levels of fidelity.

Focus on the IBM Research Think Lab

This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the IBM Research Think Lab. The Think Lab is not just a concept; it’s the physical manifestation of the convergence of computing platforms that IBM Research envisions as the future. It’s a dynamic, working lab where scientists from diverse domains collaborate, shaping new ideas and fostering partnerships that might not arise in isolation.

You will play a crucial role in supporting the Think Lab’s design teams, specifically by:

  • Working on content and experiences for the lab.
  • Creating impactful graphics and imagery.
  • Supporting our brand system and branded experiences through exceptional layout, event, and graphic design.

Preferred Education

  • High School Diploma/GED

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Demonstrated experience in graphic design and/or animation.
  • A portfolio submitted alongside your resume is mandatory, showcasing your design capabilities and thought process.
  • Basic knowledge in one or more of the following skills: Typography and layout, Brand design, Image making.
  • Light animation and basic coding skills are a plus.
  • Proficiency in design software, including the Adobe suite, Figma, and basic word processing applications.

Preferred Technical and Professional Experience

  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency in Typography and layout, Brand design, Image making, Light animation, and coding.
