Veterinary Extern – General Practice | NVA General Practice
The Tone:
This is an externship at Kitsap Veterinary Hospital, an NVA General Practice. Kitsap Veterinary Hospital is an AAHA accredited practice that strongly emphasizes wellness and preventative care. The hospital serves a robust and compliant client base that seeks and supports a high level of veterinary care, including advanced work-ups. To facilitate comprehensive in-house diagnostics, the practice frequently collaborates with mobile specialists in cardiology, radiology, and internal medicine. This role offers veterinary students practical, hands-on experience in a general practice setting, significantly contributing to patient care while enhancing their clinical and communication skills.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Patient Assessment & Planning: Gain practical experience in gathering comprehensive patient histories, performing thorough physical exams, and collaborating on the creation of effective treatment plans.
• Diagnostic & Dental Procedures: Participate actively in various diagnostic procedures and observe or assist in a wide array of dentistry services.
• Surgical & Medical Intervention: Observe, assist with, or perform surgical procedures, and contribute to the medical management of patients under supervision.
• Professional Communication: Practice and enhance essential communication skills when interacting with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Current enrollment as a veterinary student in their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of education. This role is considered an entry-level externship.
• Experience: Demonstrated academic progression to the point of being eligible for clinical externship experiences.
• Skills: Fundamental understanding of veterinary medical principles, observational skills, and a proactive approach to learning clinical procedures and patient management.
