Key Responsibilities & Learning Opportunities:

As an extern at Old Derby Animal Hospital, you will gain comprehensive practical experience by working closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians across a wide spectrum of veterinary services. Your learning journey will include:

  • Gathering Patient Histories: Developing proficiency in collecting thorough and accurate medical histories from clients.
  • Performing Physical Exams: Mastering the techniques for systematic and complete patient assessments.
  • Creation of Treatment Plans: Collaborating on the development of effective, personalized, and comprehensive treatment strategies for patients.
  • Diagnostics: Gaining exposure to and experience with various diagnostic procedures, including interpretation of results.
  • Dentistry Services: Participating in and understanding the intricacies of veterinary dental care and procedures.
  • Surgical Procedures: Opportunities for observing, assisting, or performing surgical procedures, commensurate with your skill level and the hospital’s operational needs.
  • Medical Management of Patients: Engaging in the ongoing care, monitoring, and medical management of a diverse range of patient cases.
  • Communication Skills Enhancement: Significant opportunities to refine your professional communication skills with the entire medical team, support staff, and clients – a critical component of successful veterinary practice.

Externship Duration:

Most externship experiences at Old Derby Animal Hospital typically range from two to eight weeks. The precise duration is flexible and will be determined based on mutual agreement between the student’s schedule and the hospital’s availability.

Eligibility:

All veterinary students, irrespective of their current class year, are strongly encouraged to apply and participate in NVA externships. This program is inclusive and welcomes students at various stages of their veterinary education.

Stipend & Financial Support:

Veterinary students who are actively enrolled in the clinical portion of their education are eligible to receive a travel/living expense stipend to help support their externship experience.
