Veterinary Student Externship Experience

An externship experience at an NVA hospital offers veterinary students a unique and immersive opportunity to gain practical experience and understand the daily operations of a veterinary practice. This program is designed to foster a supportive learning environment, committed to delivering excellent medicine and exceptional service to animals and their owners.

Key Learning Areas & Responsibilities:

• Work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians.
• Gain hands-on experience in gathering patient histories.
• Perform comprehensive physical examinations.
• Participate in the creation of treatment plans.
• Utilize various diagnostic tools and techniques.
• Experience aspects of dentistry services.
• Observe, assist, or potentially perform surgical procedures (as appropriate for student level).
• Contribute to the medical management of patients.
• Develop and practice essential communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Program Details:

• Duration: Experiences typically range from two to eight weeks, flexible based on student and hospital schedules.
• Target Audience (Sandwich Veterinary Hospital): Specifically designed for 3rd and 4th-year veterinary students.
• Eligibility (General): Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible.
