Your Hands-On Learning Experience:

As a veterinary student extern, you will gain true, invaluable hands-on experience working directly alongside one of our three experienced and dedicated veterinarians. Our externship is designed to immerse you fully in the day-to-day operations of a busy small animal practice, providing a comprehensive learning opportunity.

You will work closely with your supervising veterinarian to gain proficiency in a wide range of essential veterinary practices, including:

• Clinical Skills Development:
  • Gathering detailed patient histories
  • Performing thorough physical examinations
  • Assisting in the creation of comprehensive treatment plans
  • Executing and interpreting various diagnostic procedures
  • Medical management of diverse patient cases
• Surgical and Dental Procedures:
  • Observing and actively assisting in routine surgical procedures, such as spays and neuters. Opportunities for supervised performance may be available based on student proficiency and comfort.
  • Participating in comprehensive dentistry services, from exams to cleanings and extractions.
• Real-World Exposure: Gain practical experience with common presentations including wellness exams.
• Communication Enhancement: Refine your professional communication skills by interacting closely with our medical team, support staff, and directly with clients, learning how to convey complex medical information clearly and empathetically.

Externship Program Details:

• Duration: Externship experiences typically range from two to eight weeks, offering flexibility to accommodate student academic schedules and hospital availability.
• Eligibility: We warmly encourage all veterinary students, regardless of their current class year, to participate in our NVA externship program. This includes students in pre-clinical and clinical years.

Travel and Living Expense Stipend:

To support our externs, veterinary students who are currently in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel and living expense stipend. For externships at Animal Health Care of Marlboro, a stipend amount of $1,000 is provided.
