Key Responsibilities and Learning Opportunities:

As an extern, you will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain comprehensive experience across various aspects of veterinary practice. Your responsibilities and learning opportunities will include:

  • Patient Care:
    • Gathering patient histories.
    • Performing thorough physical exams.
    • Assisting in the creation of comprehensive treatment plans.
    • Engaging in diagnostics.
    • Observing and participating in dentistry services.
    • Observing, assisting, or performing surgical procedures (as appropriate for skill level and supervision).
    • Participating in the medical management of patients.
  • Communication Skills:
    • Practicing and refining communication skills with the medical team.
    • Interacting effectively with support staff.
    • Developing professional communication with clients.

Program Duration:

Most externship experiences typically range from two to eight weeks. The exact duration is flexible and will be determined based on the student’s availability and the hospital’s schedule.

Eligibility:

All veterinary students, regardless of their class year, are strongly encouraged to apply and participate in NVA externships.

Stipend Program:
