About Company

Pittsburgh Premier Veterinary Care is part of the NVA (National Veterinary Associates) network, sharing a common commitment to a supportive environment, excellent medicine, and exceptional service to animals and their owners. The facility is newly renovated and operates as a 2-doctor practice, with plans to expand its team. The hospital provides a comprehensive range of veterinary services, including various surgical procedures, dental care, urgent care, and general wellness and sick visits. They primarily see canines and felines, with the occasional exotic animal seen at the doctors’ discretion.

The practice is well-equipped with modern technology to support its operations, including:
Hand-held dental radiograph equipment for dental procedures.
Voyant electrosurgery vessel sealer for surgical procedures.
• In-house lab equipment such as IDEXX Catalyst, Procyte, and Sedivue.
• Utilizes IDEXX imaging service for digital radiographs.
• A portable ultrasound unit for in-hospital use.

Job Description

This opportunity is for a Veterinary Student Externship at Pittsburgh Premier Veterinary Care, designed to provide valuable hands-on clinical experience within a functioning veterinary practice.

Key responsibilities and learning opportunities for externs include:
Observation and active participation in day-to-day operations.
• Working closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians.
• Gaining experience in gathering patient histories and performing physical exams.
• Participating in the creation of treatment plans and diagnostics.
• Involvement in dentistry services, including observing the use of hand-held dental radiograph equipment.
Observing, assisting, or performing surgical procedures, which range from routine to more advanced soft tissue/abdominal surgeries utilizing equipment like the Voyant electrosurgery vessel sealer.
• Learning about the medical management of patients.
• Practicing communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

The externship experience:
Ranges from two to eight weeks in duration, depending on student requirements and hospital schedules.
• Is open to all veterinary students, regardless of class year.
• Offers a travel/living expense stipend for veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education.
