What You Will Gain: Key Responsibilities & Learning Opportunities

As an extern, you will work directly alongside our experienced Supervising Associate Veterinarians, gaining practical expertise across a wide spectrum of veterinary services. This hands-on mentorship will empower you to:

• Patient History & Physical Exams: Master the art of gathering comprehensive patient histories and performing thorough physical examinations.
• Treatment Plan Creation: Actively participate in the development of tailored treatment plans, understanding diagnostic pathways and therapeutic strategies.
• Diagnostics: Gain exposure to and experience with various diagnostic procedures, from in-house lab work to advanced imaging.
• Dentistry Services: Observe and assist in essential dental procedures, understanding their importance for overall pet health.
• Surgical Procedures: Observe, assist, or even perform surgical procedures under direct supervision, deepening your understanding of surgical techniques and patient care.
• Medical Management: Learn the principles and practices of comprehensive medical management for a diverse range of patient conditions.
• Communication Skills: Refine crucial communication skills by interacting with our dedicated medical team, support staff, and, most importantly, with clients to educate and build trust.

Program Details

• Duration: Most externship experiences at Greenbrier Veterinary Hospital are flexible, typically ranging from two to eight weeks, designed to accommodate both student and hospital schedules.
• Eligibility: We enthusiastically encourage all veterinary students, regardless of their class year, to participate in NVA externships. This inclusive approach ensures valuable learning for students at every stage of their education.

Financial Support
