Job Title: Veterinary Student Externship

Organization: NVA Hospitals (Specifically, Stillwater Veterinary Clinic)

About the Externship:

This externship offers a unique opportunity for veterinary students to immerse themselves in the day-to-day operations of an NVA hospital practice. Students will gain valuable hands-on clinical experience within a supportive environment that is committed to excellent medicine and provides exceptional service to animals and their owners.

Key Responsibilities and Learning Experiences:

As an extern at Stillwater Veterinary Clinic, students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to develop and refine a wide range of essential veterinary skills, including:

  • Gathering Patient Histories: Learning to effectively collect comprehensive information from clients.
  • Performing Physical Exams: Mastering the techniques for thorough patient assessments.
  • Creation of Treatment Plans: Participating in the development of effective diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
  • Diagnostics: Gaining experience with various diagnostic procedures.
  • Dentistry Services: Understanding and observing dental procedures.
  • Surgical Procedures: Opportunities to observe, assist, or potentially perform surgical procedures, depending on skill level and hospital policy.
  • Medical Management of Patients: Learning about ongoing care and management for various medical conditions.
  • Communication Skills: Practicing vital communication with the medical team, support staff, and clients, enhancing professional interactions.

Externship Duration:

Most externship experiences typically range from two to eight weeks, offering flexibility based on both student availability and hospital schedules.

Eligibility:

All veterinary students, regardless of their current class year, are strongly encouraged to apply and participate in NVA externships.

Financial Support (Stipend Program):

Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible to receive a travel/living expense stipend. For externs at Stillwater Veterinary Clinic, the stipend amount is $500.
