Job Description: Veterinary Student Externship

This externship offers a valuable clinical experience designed for veterinary students to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world animal hospital setting. It is specifically tailored for students in their clinical years (typically 3rd or 4th year) at AVMA-accredited veterinary schools.

Key Features and Expectations:

Hands-on Experience: The externship emphasizes active participation in cases. Externs are expected to listen to patient history, conduct preliminary exams, and formulate plans for diagnostics and treatment, putting their education to the test.
Mentorship and Supervision: Externs will always be supervised by experienced veterinarians and skilled support staff who serve as dedicated mentors. The program encourages a “two-way street” of mentorship, where new insights are welcomed.
Tailored Experience: Applicants are encouraged to communicate their professional goals and top priorities in their application. The hospital team is committed to customizing the experience to meet the student’s needs, whether focusing on multiple specialties or a particular area of interest. Students can also request to improve specific technical skills.
Active Participation: Externs are encouraged to actively participate, be introduced to clients, and truly become part of the hospital team.
Case Research and Discussion: Externs are encouraged to select one case per week for further research and engage veterinarians in deeper case discussions, fostering continuous learning.
Stipend Support: To enhance accessibility, stipends are offered to externs to help offset travel and lodging expenses, unless prohibited by the student’s veterinary school.

Eligibility Requirements:

• Must be a current veterinary student at an AVMA-accredited veterinary school.
Priority scheduling is given to students in their clinical years who are on official externship blocks for school credit.
• Must provide proof of professional liability insurance. SAVMA members have access to no-cost insurance through the AVMA PLIT program.
