NVA Externship Experience – Veterinary Students
An externship at an NVA hospital offers veterinary students a unique and invaluable opportunity to immerse themselves in the day-to-day operations of a veterinary practice. Students will gain significant hands-on clinical experience within a supportive environment that is deeply committed to delivering excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their human companions.
Students will collaborate closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians, gaining practical experience across a wide range of veterinary functions, including:
- Gathering patient histories
- Performing thorough physical exams
- Creation of comprehensive treatment plans
- Utilization of various diagnostics
- Providing essential dentistry services
- Observing, assisting, or performing various surgical procedures
- Effective medical management of patients
Beyond honing clinical skills, externs will also have ample opportunity to refine their communication skills, interacting effectively with the entire medical team, support staff, and clients.
At Braden River Animal Hospital, most externship experiences typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on the student’s availability and hospital scheduling. All veterinary students, regardless of their current class year, are strongly encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. For detailed information, please refer to the provided resources:
