Veterinary Extern – General Practice | NVA General Practice

The Tone:
This is an externship at North End Pet Hospital, located in a physical clinic setting. North End Pet Hospital operates as a small yet highly effective and cohesive clinic, celebrated for its dedicated team and a strong community presence evidenced by many loyal, long-term patients and clients. As an extern, you will become an integral part of this environment, gaining invaluable practical experience and contributing to the delivery of outstanding veterinary medicine, with a particular emphasis on wellness and preventative care strategies. This role is designed to significantly develop your applied clinical skills across a range of services, refine your diagnostic abilities, and enhance your professional communication within a supportive and established general practice setting.

• Team: A small, highly effective clinic team consisting of outstanding DVMs and support staff, where student externs will work closely under the direct supervision of experienced veterinarians.
• Mission: To practice excellent veterinary medicine focused on wellness and preventative care, building enduring relationships with happy patients and their owners.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Patient Assessment: Actively gather comprehensive patient histories by interacting with clients and performing thorough physical examinations to accurately assess patient health status.
• Treatment Planning: Collaborate with supervising veterinarians to develop detailed and appropriate treatment plans, then assist in the medical management of a diverse range of patients.
• Clinical Procedures: Engage in performing various diagnostic services, including understanding results, and actively assist with or perform aspects of dentistry services to improve patient oral health.
• Surgical Participation: Gain hands-on experience by observing, actively assisting with, or performing surgical procedures under the direct guidance and supervision of experienced DVMs.
• Professional Communication: Consistently practice and enhance essential communication skills, interacting effectively with the medical team, support staff, and clients to ensure clear and empathetic patient care discussions.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Must be a currently enrolled 4th year veterinary student who is actively in the clinical portion of their formal veterinary education, demonstrating readiness for practical application.
• Experience: Practical experience derived from the rigorous veterinary curriculum, coupled with a keen interest and readiness to apply foundational clinical knowledge and skills within a real-world general practice environment.
• Skills: Strong foundational clinical skills in patient assessment and care, coupled with developing communication abilities crucial for effective interaction with colleagues and clients in a medical setting.
