Veterinary Extern – General Practice | NVA General Practice

What You’ll Actually Do
• Patient Care: Actively participate in the intake process by accurately gathering detailed patient histories and performing comprehensive physical examinations, contributing directly to the ongoing medical management of diverse patient cases.
• Diagnostic Services: Gain hands-on experience in executing various diagnostic procedures, including sample collection and preliminary interpretation, to effectively inform accurate patient assessments and treatment strategies.
• Treatment Planning: Collaborate with the veterinary team to formulate and develop individualized treatment plans, considering all diagnostic findings and patient-specific needs for optimal health outcomes.
• Surgical Involvement: Engage in surgical procedures through observation, active assistance, or supervised performance, gaining invaluable practical experience in aseptic technique and intraoperative patient management.
• Client & Team Communication: Regularly practice and refine essential communication skills, fostering clear and empathetic interactions with medical teams, support staff, and clients to ensure comprehensive patient understanding and care coordination.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Candidates must be currently enrolled in an accredited Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program, demonstrating a strong academic foundation and a clear commitment to pursuing a career in general veterinary practice.
• Experience: Possess a genuine eagerness and proactive attitude to gain extensive hands-on practical experience across all facets of a general veterinary practice setting, from routine exams to specialized procedures.
• Skills: Demonstrate foundational knowledge of veterinary medicine principles, keen clinical observation abilities, a strong capacity for diagnostic comprehension, and effective interpersonal and professional communication skills vital for team collaboration and client education.
