Veterinary Extern – General Practice | NVA General Practice

The Tone:
This is an externship at Sulphur Animal Clinic, located in Sulphur, LA. Sulphur Animal Clinic, part of NVA General Practice, places a strong emphasis on interactive learning and hands-on experience. • Team: Works closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians, medical team, support staff, and clients.
• Mission: To provide veterinary students with extensive hands-on experience in a general practice setting, fostering the development of critical clinical and communication skills through direct patient interaction and team collaboration.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Patient Histories & Exams: Gain practical experience in accurately gathering patient histories and performing thorough physical examinations as part of the diagnostic process.
• Treatment Plan Creation: Work alongside supervising Associate Veterinarians to formulate comprehensive and individualized treatment plans for a diverse range of patient cases.
• Diagnostic Tool Utilization: Be exposed to and utilize a wide variety of diagnostic tools, including radiology, ultrasound, hematology, and cytology, to aid in patient assessment.
• Clinical Procedures & Surgery: Participate in dentistry services and have opportunities to observe, assist, or perform surgical procedures under direct supervision.
• Medical Management & Communication: Develop skills in the medical management of patients while practicing and refining communication with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Veterinary Student. Currently enrolled in a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program. Career level: Entry-Level.
• Experience: No prior externship experience required; all veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate.
• Skills: Demonstrated foundational clinical skills relevant to veterinary medicine, including patient history gathering, physical examination techniques, and an understanding of treatment plan creation. Proficiency in observing and applying diagnostic tools (radiology, ultrasound, hematology, cytology) and an eagerness to learn about dentistry and surgical procedures. Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills for interacting effectively with medical teams, support staff, and clients.
