Veterinary Extern – General Practice | NVA General Practice

The Tone:
This is an externship at NVA General Practice, located in New York, NY. NVA operates a network of veterinary hospitals dedicated to excellent medicine and exceptional service for animals and their owners. This role offers veterinary students a vital opportunity to gain hands-on clinical experience and understand the daily operations of a supportive general practice. The externship is designed to foster both clinical and communication skills within an environment committed to animal welfare.

The TL;DR

• Type: Temporary (Most experiences range from two to eight weeks)

• Team: Works closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians.
• Mission: To provide veterinary students with hands-on clinical experience and a comprehensive understanding of general practice operations.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Patient Assessment: Develop skills in gathering comprehensive patient histories and conducting thorough physical examinations.
• Treatment Planning: Gain hands-on experience in the collaborative creation and refinement of patient treatment plans.
• Clinical Procedures: Observe, assist with, or perform a variety of diagnostic tests and dentistry services.
• Surgical Exposure: Participate in surgical procedures by observing, assisting, or performing under supervision.
• Patient Care & Communication: Learn medical management strategies for patients and practice effective communication with colleagues and clients.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Current veterinary student, regardless of class year.
• Experience: No specific years of prior professional experience required; the role is designed for learning and gaining hands-on clinical exposure.
• Skills: Foundational clinical knowledge, ability to learn and practice patient assessment, treatment planning, diagnostic and procedural assistance, and patient medical management. Strong communication skills for interacting with veterinary teams and clients.
• Bonus: Eligibility for a $500 travel/living expense stipend is available for veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education at West Village Veterinary Hospital.
