Veterinary Extern – General Practice | NVA General Practice

The Tone:
This is an externship at NVA General Practice, located in Havre de Grace, MD. An externship at an NVA hospital, specifically Swan Creek Veterinary Clinic, offers a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and exceptional service to animals and the people who love them. This role provides veterinary students with the unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of a practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. You will contribute to a busy, close-knit team dedicated to the well-being of patients and clients within a community it has served for over 17 years.

• Mission: To provide valuable hands-on clinical experience and insight into the daily operations of a general practice, supporting the delivery of optimal patient care.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Observe: Shadow doctors and highly qualified technicians to gain broad exposure to veterinary practice.
• Collaborate: Work up cases alongside doctors to develop diagnostic and treatment plans.
• Assist: Support surgical procedures, contributing to patient care during operations.
• Develop: Aid in the creation of anesthesia protocols for various patient needs.
• Inquire: Ask questions to deepen your understanding of daily practice life and veterinary medicine.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently enrolled as a veterinary student, regardless of class year.
• Experience: No prior externship experience is required; this opportunity is designed for students seeking practical clinical exposure.
• Skills: Clinical observation, Case work-up, Surgical assistance, Anesthesia protocol development, Active learning.
• Bonus: Eligibility for a $1,500 travel/living expense stipend is available for veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education.
