Job Description
The externship experience at an NVA hospital offers students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the day-to-day operations of a veterinary practice and gain invaluable hands-on clinical experience.

Key Responsibilities and Learning Opportunities:
• Work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians.
• Gain experience in gathering patient histories.
• Perform physical examinations.
• Participate in the creation of treatment plans.
• Engage with diagnostics.
• Learn about dentistry services.
• Observe, assist with, or perform surgical procedures.
• Understand the medical management of patients.
• Practice and enhance communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Program Details:
Duration: Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks, depending on the student’s and hospital’s schedules.
Eligibility: All veterinary students, regardless of their class year, are encouraged to participate.
Stipend: Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Details on stipend amounts and the program are available via provided links (not included in this text).
