An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with the opportunity to understand the daily operations of a veterinary practice.
Job Description: Externship Experience
This externship offers students a unique opportunity to gain valuable hands-on clinical experience and understand the day-to-day operations of an NVA hospital.
Key Responsibilities and Learning Opportunities:
• Clinical Skills Development: Students will work closely with a supervising veterinarian to gain practical experience in various aspects of patient care, including:
• Gathering patient histories.
• Performing physical examinations.
• Creating comprehensive treatment plans.
• Utilizing and interpreting diagnostics.
• Assisting with or observing dentistry services.
• Observing, assisting with, or performing surgical procedures.
• Medical management of patients.
• Communication Skills Enhancement: Externs will have the chance to practice and refine their communication skills by interacting with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Program Details:
• Duration: Most externship experiences typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on the student’s availability and the hospital’s schedule.
• Eligibility: All veterinary students, regardless of their class year, are encouraged to apply and participate in NVA externships.
• Stipend: Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. For Murrieta Oaks Veterinary Hospital, the specific stipend amount is $1,000.
