Veterinary Extern – General Practice | NVA General Practice

The Tone:
This is an externship at NVA General Practice, located in Gahanna, OH. This role offers students a unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of a full-service practice and gain valuable, hands-on clinical experience across a wide range of veterinary services.

What You’ll Actually Do
Patient Care & Assessment: Work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gather comprehensive patient histories and perform thorough physical examinations for a diverse range of animals, including both shelter and client medical cases at our 11,000 sq. ft. facility.
Clinical Management: Contribute to the creation of effective treatment plans, develop diagnostic strategies using state-of-the-art in-house Idexx equipment, and engage in the medical management of patients under veterinary supervision, emphasizing high quality medicine.
Surgical & Dental Procedures: Observe, assist, or potentially perform a variety of surgical procedures, including routine wellness care for our on-site shelter animals and advanced orthopedic procedures such as fracture repairs, TPLO, and Tightrope, alongside participation in dentistry services.
Diagnostic Imaging & Lab Work: Utilize advanced diagnostic tools such as digital radiography, dental radiography, in-house Idexx equipment (Sedivue, CBC, Chemistry), and ultrasound to aid in accurate diagnoses and comprehensive patient care within a state-of-the-art facility.
Professional Development: Enhance communication skills by interacting effectively with the medical team, support staff, and clients, fostering a collaborative and professional learning environment while actively participating in numerous client medical and surgical cases.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Doctorate Degree. Career level: Entry-Level. Education requirement: Currently a 3rd or 4th year veterinary student pursuing a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, with education focused on clinical practice.
• Experience: Must be in the clinical portion of their veterinary education, demonstrating readiness for hands-on experience in a full-service general practice setting. Externship experiences are flexible and can range from two to eight weeks based on student and hospital schedules.
• Skills: Proficiency in patient history taking, physical examination techniques, understanding of treatment plan creation, familiarity with diagnostic procedures, surgical observation/assistance, medical patient management, and effective communication with medical teams and clients.
• Bonus: Eligibility for a travel/living expense stipend, indicating a commitment to the clinical phase of veterinary training, and a willingness to immerse in a comprehensive externship experience ranging from two to eight weeks at our fully equipped facility.
