This externship experience at an NVA hospital offers veterinary students a unique opportunity to gain a deep understanding of the day-to-day operations of a busy veterinary practice and acquire invaluable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is distinct, all share a common commitment to fostering a supportive environment, upholding excellent medicine, and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
At the Animal Care Center of Polaris, externs will work in close collaboration with supervising Associate Veterinarians to develop and refine a broad range of critical skills, including:
- Gathering comprehensive patient histories
- Performing thorough physical exams
- Creation of effective treatment plans
- Utilizing various diagnostics
- Providing dentistry services
- Observing, assisting, or performing surgical procedures
- Medical management of patients
Beyond clinical proficiencies, student externs will also have ample opportunities to enhance their communication skills, interacting effectively with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Special Opportunities for Third and Fourth Year Veterinary Students:
This externship is particularly beneficial for third and fourth year Veterinary students, who can expect to:
- Take charge of all wellness care and surgical procedures for our on-site shelter animals.
- Actively participate in numerous client medical and surgical cases.
- Gain exposure to and participate in advanced orthopedic procedures weekly, such as: TECA, TPLO, Tightrope, and THR.
Hospital Facilities and Environment:
Our practices emphasize high quality medicine and surgery within full-service, state-of-the-art facilities. Hospitals are fully equipped with cutting-edge technology, including:
- DR (Digital Radiography)
- In-house Heska/Idexx equipment
- Heated surgical tables
- Ultrasound
- Fluid pumps
- And much more!
Work Schedule and Benefits:
- Work Schedule: Externs work 5 days with 2 days off.
- Reimbursement: Students receive a reimbursement for gas and food of up to $100/wk. during their stay.
