Veterinary Extern – General Practice | NVA General Practice

The Tone:
This is an externship at NVA General Practice, specifically hosted at the Princeton Animal Hospital & Carnegie Cat Clinic, located in Princeton, NJ. What You’ll Actually Do
• Patient History & Examination: Collaborate closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to proficiently gather comprehensive patient histories and accurately perform thorough physical examinations, essential for initial patient assessment and understanding daily clinic flow.
• Treatment Plan Development: Actively participate in the creation and refinement of effective treatment plans, learning to integrate diagnostic findings with patient needs and owner preferences for optimal veterinary care.
• Clinical Service Delivery: Gain practical, hands-on experience in the application of various diagnostic techniques, participation in dentistry services, and the medical management of diverse patient conditions.
• Surgical Involvement: Engage directly in the surgical aspect of veterinary care by observing, assisting with, or potentially performing surgical procedures under the direct professional supervision of experienced veterinarians.
• Professional Communication: Cultivate and apply strong communication skills through regular and meaningful interactions with the medical team, support staff, and clients, fostering a collaborative and service-oriented approach to patient care.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Must be currently enrolled as a veterinary student in an accredited program, with all class years encouraged to apply for this valuable learning opportunity.
• Experience: An eager desire to actively participate in and gain significant hands-on clinical experience across the full spectrum of general veterinary practice operations.
• Skills: Demonstrated foundational knowledge in veterinary medicine, strong developing clinical skills relevant to patient examination and care, and effective interpersonal and professional communication abilities.
• Bonus: Eligibility for a travel/living expense stipend, which is specifically offered to veterinary students who are currently in the clinical portion of their education. The stipend amount for this location is $500.
