Job Description:
This externship program provides DVM students with a comprehensive understanding of veterinary practice operations and valuable hands-on clinical experience. As an extern, you will:
• Understand Day-to-Day Operations: Observe and participate in the daily routines of the veterinary hospital.
• Gain Hands-On Clinical Experience: Work directly with veterinary professionals to hone your skills.
• Gather Patient Histories: Learn to effectively collect and document patient information.
• Perform Physical Exams: Develop proficiency in conducting thorough physical examinations.
• Create Treatment Plans: Assist in developing appropriate treatment strategies for various conditions.
• Perform Diagnostics: Gain experience in utilizing diagnostic tools and interpreting results.
• Dentistry Services: Participate in dental procedures, gaining experience in oral health care.
• Observe/Assist in Surgical Procedures: Witness and assist in surgical procedures under the guidance of experienced surgeons.
• Medical Management of Patients: Participate in the ongoing medical care of hospitalized patients.
• Practice Communication Skills: Interact with the medical team, support staff, and clients, enhancing your communication abilities.
• Externship Length: Most externships range from two to eight weeks, adjusted to fit student and hospital schedules. Please note that externships at AMSC are exclusively for clinical year students.
