Veterinary Extern – General Practice | NVA General Practice

The Tone:
This is an externship at Heron Creek Animal Hospital, located in North Port, FL. Heron Creek, part of NVA General Practice, is a continuously evolving hospital dedicated to expanding its clientele, medical capabilities, and professional opportunities. This role is vital for developing future veterinary professionals by providing a supportive, Fear Free environment where DVMs have the freedom to practice medicine while upholding high AAHA standards of care, all while never turning away new clients in the community.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Patient Assessment: Work closely with supervising veterinarians to expertly gather comprehensive patient histories and perform thorough, detailed physical examinations on a wide range of cases.
• Treatment Planning & Diagnostics: Collaborate in the creation of effective and tailored treatment plans, actively utilizing various diagnostic services to ensure accurate assessments and informed medical management decisions for patients.
• Surgical & Dental Support: Gain invaluable practical experience by observing, assisting in, or performing a variety of surgical procedures and dentistry services under direct supervision, building foundational surgical skills.
• Medical Management: Engage in the direct medical management of diverse patients, applying learned clinical knowledge to real-world scenarios and contributing to patient care protocols.
• Professional Communication: Cultivate and enhance essential communication skills through regular and meaningful interactions with the entire medical team, dedicated support staff, and pet owners, fostering a collaborative and client-focused veterinary environment.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Applicants must be actively enrolled in a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program and have successfully progressed into the clinical portion of their education. This externship is designed as an entry-level clinical learning opportunity within a general practice setting.
• Experience: Eligibility requires students to be specifically in their final clinical year of veterinary school, indicating a readiness for practical, hands-on clinical experience. Externship experiences typically range from two to eight weeks based on mutual student and hospital schedules.
• Skills: Demonstrated foundational skills in gathering accurate patient histories, performing comprehensive physical exams, participating in the development of treatment plans, and assisting with both diagnostic services and surgical/dental procedures. Strong communication skills are also required for effective interaction with colleagues and clients.
