An externship experience at an NVA hospital (specifically Weare Animal Hospital) offers veterinary students a valuable opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of a veterinary practice and gain hands-on clinical experience.
Job Description
The externship program is designed to provide a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and exceptional service to animals and their owners. Key aspects of the externship include:
• Clinical Experience: Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in:
• Gathering patient histories
• Performing physical exams
• Creating treatment plans
• Diagnostics
• Dentistry services
• Observing, assisting, or performing surgical procedures
• Medical management of patients
• Communication Skills: Externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
• Externship Duration: Externships typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on the schedules of the student and the hospital.
• Eligibility: All veterinary students, regardless of their class year, are encouraged to participate.
• Stipend: Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.
