An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides a unique opportunity for students to understand the day-to-day operations of a veterinary practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. Job Description:
As a student extern, you will work closely with a supervising veterinarian to gain experience in the following areas:
• Gathering Patient Histories: Collecting and documenting relevant information about patients’ medical backgrounds and current conditions.
• Performing Physical Exams: Conducting thorough physical examinations to assess patients’ overall health and identify potential issues.
• Creation of Treatment Plans: Participating in the development of individualized treatment plans based on diagnostic findings and patient needs.
• Diagnostics: Assisting with and interpreting diagnostic tests, such as bloodwork, radiographs, and ultrasounds.
• Dentistry Services: Observing and assisting with dental procedures, including cleanings, extractions, and oral surgery.
• Observing/Assisting or Performing Surgical Procedures: Depending on experience and comfort level, students may observe, assist, or perform surgical procedures under the supervision of the veterinarian.
• Medical Management of Patients: Participating in the ongoing medical management of hospitalized and outpatient cases.
• Communication Skills: Practicing effective communication with the medical team, support staff, and clients to ensure clear understanding and optimal patient care.
Externship experiences typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of their year of study, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.
