Job Description

About the Job

An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides a unique opportunity for students to understand the day-to-day operations of a veterinary practice and gain valuable, hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, all share a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and a dedication to providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.

Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in:

• Gathering patient histories
• Performing physical exams
• Creating treatment plans
• Diagnostics
• Dentistry services
• Observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures
• Medical management of patients

In addition to practicing clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. Externships at Brentwood Family Pet Care are designed for 3rd and 4th year students.

Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Refer to the provided links for a list of stipend amounts and details on the stipend program.
