About the Job

An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides a unique opportunity for students to understand the day-to-day operations of a veterinary practice and gain valuable, hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital possesses its unique characteristics, they all share a common commitment to a supportive environment, excellent medicine, and exceptional service to animals and their owners.

Job Description:

Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in various aspects of veterinary practice, including:

Gathering Patient Histories: Learning to effectively collect relevant information about a patient’s medical background.
Performing Physical Exams: Developing proficiency in conducting thorough physical examinations to assess a patient’s overall health.
Creating Treatment Plans: Participating in the formulation of appropriate treatment plans based on diagnostic findings and patient needs.
Diagnostics: Gaining experience with various diagnostic procedures, such as bloodwork, urinalysis, and imaging.
Dentistry Services: Observing and assisting with dental procedures, including cleaning, polishing, and extractions.
Observing/Assisting or Performing Surgical Procedures: Depending on skill level and hospital needs, students may observe, assist with, or even perform surgical procedures under the guidance of a veterinarian.
Medical Management of Patients: Learning how to manage hospitalized patients, administer medications, and monitor their progress.

Beyond clinical skills, student externs will have the chance to refine their:

Communication Skills: Interacting effectively with the medical team, support staff, and clients to convey information and provide support.

Externship Details:

Duration: Most externships range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules.
Eligibility: Externships at Flagler Animal Hospital are designed for clinical year students.

Stipend: Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.
