About ABQ Petcare Hospital and the Veterinary Externship

ABQ Petcare Hospital offers a dynamic externship experience for veterinary students, particularly those in their 4th year. This program focuses on providing hands-on experience in advanced medical and surgical procedures.

Job Description: Veterinary Externship

This externship is designed to provide veterinary students with practical, real-world experience in a busy small animal practice. Externs will work closely with experienced veterinarians to hone their clinical and communication skills.

Key Responsibilities and Opportunities:

Advanced Surgical Exposure: 4th-year students can expect to be involved in more advanced surgeries, such as nephrectomies and liver lobectomies, depending on the hospital’s caseload during the externship period. Note: the hospital does not perform orthopedics.
Diagnostic Imaging and Endoscopy: Extensive opportunities to participate in and learn about ultrasounds and scopes. The hospital receives referrals for these services from other clinics.
Mentorship: Work alongside 3 to 4 experienced doctors who are dedicated to helping students learn and grow.
Case Management: Opportunity to manage their own cases under the supervision of the Managing DVM.
Clinical Skills Development:
Gathering patient histories
Performing physical exams
Creating treatment plans
Performing and interpreting diagnostics
Participating in dentistry services
Observing, assisting with, and potentially performing surgical procedures
Medical management of patients
Communication Skills: Practice communication with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Externship Details:

Duration: Externship experiences typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules.
Eligibility: All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are welcome to apply, although clinical experience is a plus.
Stipend: Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.
