Appeals Bureau: Trial Preparation Assistant, Level II | City of New York

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at the Office of the District Attorney, Bronx County (BXDA), located in Bronx, NY. The BXDA is dedicated to ensuring public safety and striving for equal justice for the over 1.4 million residents of Bronx County. This role is essential for supporting Assistant District Attorneys with post-conviction matters, directly contributing to the BXDA’s mission of pursuing justice with integrity, assisting crime victims, and ensuring fairness to defendants. By providing critical legal and administrative support, this position helps maintain the BXDA’s standard of excellence in community representation.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Document Preparation: Assist attorneys with all aspects of filing motions and briefs, including proofreading, cite-checking, and generating Tables of Contents and Tables of Authorities.
• Formatting & Compliance: Format and prepare legal documents for filing, ensuring compliance with court rules and bureau guidelines.
• Motion Drafting: Draft procedural motion responses under attorney supervision.
• Exhibit Management: Prepare exhibits and appendices for legal documents.
• Stakeholder Communication: Communicate with defense attorneys and courts regarding cases, fulfilling defense requests for exhibits.

The Must-Haves
• Background: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college is preferred. Minimum requirement is high school graduation or equivalent.
• Experience: Minimum of three years of experience in community work or community-centered activities related to the duties described, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Proven proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat.
• Skills: Strong interpersonal communication, strong writing skills, and meticulous attention to detail.
• Bonus: Ability to work independently and effectively under deadlines; capacity to multi-task in a fast-paced and changing environment.
