Transportation Management Trainee 2026 | BNSF Railway
The Tone:
This is a full-time Trainee Program at BNSF Railway, located across multiple cities including Barstow, CA. BNSF Railway is one of the largest U.S. railroads, transporting the nation’s freight across 28 western states and 3 Canadian provinces. This role is crucial in supporting the movement of essential products and materials that help feed, clothe, supply, and power communities throughout America and the world, significantly impacting the efficiency and success of BNSF’s operations.

• Mission: Manages daily operations, enforces safety standards, and guides a team toward operational excellence within the rail transportation industry.
What You’ll Actually Do
• Safety Leadership: Lead safety briefings, ensure compliance with Federal Railroad Administration and BNSF rules, and conduct safety meetings.
• Operational Oversight: Investigate accidents, monitor costs, oversee crew discussions on safety, and manage compliance with attendance policies.
• Crew Support: Assist crews with personnel paperwork, vacation requests, and provide transportation for timely operations.
• Customer Communication: Correspond with customers regarding shipments and coordinate the planning of cars, locomotives, and crews within terminals.
• Operations Management: Implement policies, supervise employees, and manage daily train and switching operations while coordinating with various departments.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Legally authorized to work in the United States and at least eighteen (18) years old upon hire, not requiring BNSF’s employment authorization assistance, with a Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Logistics, Transportation, Supply Chain Management, Business, Communication, Technical, or a similar field from an accredited university, maintaining at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA.
• Experience: Less than three (3) years of professional work experience/military service (excluding internships/part-time jobs during studies), prior internship experience in Supply Chain, Business, or Logistics is preferred. Must be capable of working in a 24/7 environment including nights, weekends, and holidays, safely performing duties outdoors in all weather conditions, navigating uneven surfaces, climbing ladders, and willing to relocate anywhere on the BNSF Railway operating system with reliable transportation. Must be capable of visually distinguishing red, blue, green, yellow, and lunar (clear light) colors and able to hear and distinguish auditory signals.
• Skills: Robust decision-making, advanced problem-solving abilities, dedication to fostering a safety-first work environment, leadership, teamwork, clear communication, adaptability, and resilience to overcome obstacles and meet deadlines.
• Bonus: Have or have held a leadership position in a campus, community, or extracurricular organization.
