Transit Intern | County of Sonoma
The Tone:
This is an internship at County of Sonoma, located in Santa Rosa, CA. The Sonoma County Public Infrastructure (SPI) Department is dedicated to planning, building, managing, and maintaining critical community services and infrastructure, including essential public transit. This role offers an undergraduate student excellent hands-on experience directly supporting the small Transit Division team, which manages fixed route and paratransit services for over 850,000 riders annually. As a Transit Intern, you will play a key role in learning about and contributing to a wide range of transit-related topics and tasks, directly impacting public transportation in Sonoma County.

• Mission: To support the Sonoma County Transit Division in managing transportation services and improving public transit efficiency and rider experience.
• Tech Stack: Database, AVL/Automatic Passenger Counting System, Farebox, Clipper
What You’ll Actually Do
• Updating: Update bus stop inventory in a database.
• Assisting: Assist with implementation and quality control for the new AVL/Automatic Passenger Counting System.
• Analyzing: Analyze transit ridership data.
• Performing: Perform Farebox and Clipper data analysis.
• Assisting: Assist with public outreach and marketing.
• Conducting: Conduct field work and driving as needed for tasks such as bus stop inspections and notice posting.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Current enrollment in a full-time or part-time academic or vocational curriculum at an accredited college or university, with an interest in transit or city and regional planning.
• Experience: None required. Desired experience includes analyzing field data, monitoring conditions, creating summary reports, and conducting public outreach and/or marketing.
• Skills: Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills; ability to work well in a small team and manage varying workloads and priorities; possession of a valid California Driver’s License.
• Bonus: Completed coursework in City or Regional Planning or a related field.
