Theme Lighting Design Internship
This internship focuses on the Theme Lighting team, responsible for designing, documenting, and facilitating the production of lighting fixtures for various Disney projects. These projects include theme park attractions, restaurants, shops, area development, and resorts.
What You’ll Do as an Intern
As a Theme Lighting Design intern, you will:
• Support design projects: Assist with project design development and technical documentation.
• Fixture selection: Prepare information and documentation for selecting the right lighting fixtures for each project.
• Design documentation: Create illustrations, photographs, scaled images, and research to document assigned projects.
• Technical tasks: Perform basic technical tasks and documentation, including plotting elevations, showing fixtures in scale, and reading architectural plans.
• Scope tracking & cost estimating: Support Theme Lighting project leads in tracking project scope and estimating costs.
• Production support: Assist the Specialty Design Production team with fixture procurement, vendor oversight, and shipping coordination.
• Field installation: Participate in direct field installation at a project construction site.
Required Qualifications and Skills
• Knowledge and curiosity: Demonstrate a strong understanding and interest in Live Entertainment/Theater, Themed Entertainment, and Immersive Experiences.
• Design experience: Experience in designing or fabricating specialty items or fixtures.
• Self-starter: Be able to work independently, take initiative, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
• Communication skills: Possess excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively give and receive direction.
• Adaptability: Be flexible and adaptable to changing demands and work effectively within a team.
• Organization: Be highly organized and able to meet deadlines under pressure.
• Drawing skills: Demonstrate proficiency in hand drafting and sketching.
• Software skills: Be proficient in REVIT, AutoCAD, Inventor, and Adobe Creative Suite.
• Technical understanding: Possess working knowledge and experience reading and understanding architectural drawings and interfaces.
• Lighting basics: Understand the fundamental principles of lighting to collaborate with Show Lighting counterparts.
Preferred Qualifications
• Design experience: Previous experience in a design practice or professional internship, ideally focused on specialty items, fixture design, and/or fabrication.
• Familiarity with design and construction: Knowledge of product or industrial design and construction techniques.
• Related field experience: Familiarity with architecture, interior design, facility lighting, etc.
Education Requirements
• Current enrollment: Be currently enrolled as a Junior or higher, or have graduated within the past 6 months, from an accredited college/university.
• Degree focus: Be pursuing a degree in Industrial Design, Interior Design, Theatrical Design, or a related field.
Portfolio Requirements
• Portfolio submission: A portfolio review is mandatory for this position.
• Portfolio link: To be considered, applicants must include a link to their portfolio on their resume.
Eligibility Requirements
• Enrolled in school/graduated recently: Be enrolled in an accredited college/university taking at least one class in the semester/quarter prior to the internship or have graduated within the past 6 months.
• Age: Be at least 18 years of age.
• Previous internship experience: Have not completed one year of continual employment on a Disney internship or program.
• Work authorization: Possess unrestricted work authorization.
• Transportation: Have reliable transportation to/from work.
