Job Description (Detailed)

This is a temporary position specifically designed for nursing students. Its primary purpose is to provide students with the opportunity to practice in all nursing areas.

Key Aspects of the Role:
• The position involves being co-assigned with a Registered Nurse (RN).
• The student will perform direct and indirect patient care under the direct supervision of an RN.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Education: Candidates must be entering their final semester/year of a Diploma Program, Associate, or Baccalaureate RN program from an accredited School of Nursing.
• Certification: Must obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of the hire date.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:
The role encompasses a wide range of duties, assisting the RN in various aspects of professional nursing practice:

• Direct Patient Care Assistance:
• Provides direct patient care to promote patient comfort and facilitate diagnostic and treatment procedures as outlined in the nursing care plan.
• Assists the RN with patients’ activities of daily living (ADLs) in a timely manner, following departmental procedures.
• Performs designated procedures as needed.
• Accurately observes, records, and reports all patient concerns, symptoms, reactions, and progress to the RN in a timely manner.
• Assists the RN with examinations and procedures.
• Demonstrates competency in basic and intermediate care skills, as verified by a nurse mentor, clinical preceptor, nurse manager, and/or nurse director.
• Assists the RN with procedures defined by the advanced skills inventory (where applicable).
• Demonstrates competency in skills identified on the skills inventory that may be carried out independently (where applicable).
• Demonstrates competency in skills identified on the skills inventory that may be carried out under direct supervision of an RN (where applicable).

• Indirect Patient Care and Environment Maintenance:
• Maintains a clean, sanitary, and safe environment to prevent and/or control infections and ensure the safety of patients, visitors, and employees.
• Thoroughly cleans assigned patient care areas according to departmental procedure.
• Thoroughly cleans assigned unit equipment according to schedule/need and keeps hallways and work areas free of equipment.
• May act in the role of a sitter for a patient as assigned by the charge RN.
• May have limited access to medication, specifically during the transport of non-controlled substances at the request of a licensed care provider.

• Professional Development:
• Educates self effectively and assists in peer education.
• Actively seeks educational opportunities to increase competence.
• Attends staff meetings and unit in-services as applicable.

Physical Requirements:
The position requires certain physical capabilities:
• Capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking.
• Able to lift up to 40 pounds and push/pull heavy loads.
• Possesses visual, auditory, and oral acuity along with manual dexterity and technical ability.
