Job Description: Temporary Nursing Student Position

This is a temporary position designed for nursing students to gain practical experience across various nursing areas. The role involves working under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and is co-assigned with an RN. The individual in this role may perform both direct and indirect patient care.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Must be entering their final semester/year of a Diploma Program, Associate, or Baccalaureate RN program from an accredited School of Nursing.
Certification: Must obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of the hire date.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties are intended to describe the general nature of the work and are not an exhaustive list. Other duties may be assigned.

Direct Patient Care & Support:
• Assists the Registered Nurse (RN) in professional nursing practice by providing direct patient care to enhance comfort and facilitate diagnostic/treatment procedures as per the nursing care plan.
• Assists the RN with patients’ activities of daily living (ADLs) in a timely manner, adhering to departmental procedures.
• Performs designated procedures following departmental guidelines.
• Assists the RN with examinations and procedures according to departmental procedures.
Observation, Reporting & Documentation:
Accurately observes, records, and reports all patient concerns, symptoms, reactions, and progress to the RN in a timely manner.
Skills Competency & Development:
• Demonstrates competency in basic and intermediate care skills, validated by a nurse mentor, clinical preceptor, nurse manager, and/or nurse director.
• Assists the RN with procedures defined by the advanced skills inventory (where applicable).
• Demonstrates competency in skills identified on the skills inventory that may be carried out independently (where applicable).
• Demonstrates competency in skills identified on the skills inventory that may be carried out under direct supervision of an RN (if applicable).
Education & Professional Growth:
• Educates self effectively and assists in peer education.
• Seeks educational opportunities to increase competence.
• Attends staff meetings and unit in-services as applicable.
Indirect Patient Care & Environment Management:
• Assists the RN with indirect care by maintaining a clean, sanitary, and safe environment to prevent/control infections and ensure patient, visitor, and employee safety.
• Thoroughly cleans assigned patient care areas according to departmental procedure.
• Thoroughly cleans assigned unit equipment according to schedule/need and keeps hallways and work areas free of equipment.
Additional Responsibilities:
• May act in the role of a sitter for a patient as assigned by the charge RN.
• May have limited access to medication, specifically during the transport of non-controlled substances at the request of a licensed care provider.

Physical Requirements:

The role requires meeting specific physical demands, with reasonable accommodations available for individuals with disabilities.

• Capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking.
• Able to lift up to 40 pounds and push/pull heavy loads.
• Possesses visual, auditory, and oral acuity along with manual dexterity and technical ability.
