IT Data Center Operations, Technology & Engineer Fellow (Fall) | Metropolitan Transportation Authority

The Tone:
This is an internship at Metropolitan Transportation Authority, located in New York, NY. Metropolitan Transportation Authority provides essential public transportation services, which rely heavily on robust and continuously operating IT infrastructure. This role is vital for ensuring the physical plant of the MTA’s data centers, including critical HVAC and power support, is effectively managed and monitored. The work directly contributes to maintaining the reliability and stability of the technological backbone that supports the entire transportation network.

• Mission: Ensure the reliable operation of the MTA’s data centers by supporting the management and monitoring of their physical infrastructure, including HVAC and power systems.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Documentation: Draft and review Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and Method of Procedure (MOP) documentation for daily operations and system maintenance.
• System Oversight: Observe and oversee “State of Good Repair” work for HVAC and Power systems within the data centers.
• System Support: Assist with the design, review, and maintenance of Building Management Systems, as well as HVAC and Power systems.
• Tool Optimization: Explore options to optimize tools, such as Solar Winds, to better manage systems and perform cleanout of major site communications rooms.
• Project Contribution: Contribute to projects involving the integration of monitoring and alarms, review of Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) systems, and assistance with power infrastructure upgrades and consolidation.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Student currently matriculated in an undergraduate program in good standing with at least a 2.5 GPA, preferably majoring in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
• Experience: Demonstrated knowledge of power systems/equipment, a basic understanding of HVAC systems, and familiarity with Building Architecture.
• Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills, with an ability to prioritize tasks effectively, work independently, and contribute as an active team player.
• Bonus: A goal of achieving certification as an Electrician, Professional Engineer, or Architect.
