Technician Apprentice – Power Generation (Chesapeake, VA)

About the Apprenticeship Program
- You will be a full-time, paid employee from day one.

- An Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Automotive & Diesel Technology.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)
- Health and Safety Fundamentals: Champion and model proactive health and safety behaviors, identifying, reporting, and acting to improve safety, contributing to an injury-free workplace.
- Diagnostics Application: Translate customer complaints into a troubleshooting plan. Utilize guided workflows, procedures, specialized equipment (mechanical and electronic service tools), and computer software to diagnose issues and isolate failed components. Validate repairs by duplicating complaints and document all troubleshooting results.
- Electronic Service Tool Application: Identify and utilize appropriate hardware and software tools for service events. Interpret electronic tool results and recommendations to determine next steps for service resolution.
- Power Generation Systems Knowledge: Demonstrate knowledge of Cummins and industry standards by complying with all safe work procedures, including Personal Protective Equipment. Interpret and analyze Power Generation system operation and integration (e.g., switch gear, power system controls, uninterruptible power supply) using tools, service publications, and measurements to efficiently and correctly diagnose and repair.
- Product Repair and Maintenance: Repair and maintain mechanical/electrical products following guidelines and using required tools within standard repair times. Disassemble and assemble engines or power generators, inspect and replace parts and components according to re-use guidelines, and perform progressive damage checks.
- Technical Escalation: Obtain technical issue information, utilize available resources and data management tools. Elevate issues to higher levels of expertise, balancing timely customer response with investigation efforts, and capture all troubleshooting steps in relevant databases.

What You’ll Need to Be Successful
- Passionate about working with your hands.
- Ability to work with small hand tools while maintaining overall safety.
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Broad mechanical and electrical repair and maintenance abilities.
- High Voltage / Low Voltage experience.
- Capable of electrical repair and maintenance with minimal supervision – hands-on exposure to working on power generation products.
Education/Experience Requirements
- Applicants must meet one of the following minimum community college general education course requirements:
- 2.8 GPA High School (unweighted), OR
- 22 ACT score, OR
- GED with one year of college including Math and English with a minimum 2.8 GPA.
Additional Qualifications & Requirements
- A current valid driver’s license is required.
- This role requires a 5-year motor vehicle report, free from major violations.
- Applicant must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical.
- 3 years of driving experience.
- This role is subject to Department of Transportation (DOT) driving regulations, including Hours of Service and Electronic Log Booking Device use.
- Federal law requires a CDL holder to be 21 years of age or older; applicant must be 21 years of age.
- A CDL may be required to obtain upon hire.
