Program Overview:
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) offers a 10-week summer internship program designed to provide qualified college and post-graduate students with an inside look into the TBI’s critical mission and work. Operating under the motto, “That Guilt Shall Not Escape Nor Innocence Suffer,” TBI serves as Tennessee’s lead law enforcement agency, valuing truth, bravery, and integrity. This internship provides a broad understanding of TBI’s unique role within the state’s criminal justice system, offering hands-on experience and insight into various investigative functions.
Internship Duration:
June 1, 2026 – August 7, 2026 (10-week program)
Program Structure & Learning Environment:
The TBI Chattanooga Internship Program offers a dynamic and rotational structure, providing students with hands-on experience working directly with Special Agents and professional staff. Interns will be exposed to multiple investigative divisions and units within the Chattanooga office, gaining a comprehensive understanding of law enforcement operations and administrative functions. Divisions and units involved include:
- Criminal Investigation Division (CID)
- Drug Investigation Division (DID)
- Medicaid Fraud Control Division (MFCD)
- Fire Investigations
- Cyber & Digital Evidence Unit (CDEU)
- Human Trafficking Unit
- Collaboration with Criminal Intelligence Analysts
Key Responsibilities & Learning Opportunities:
Interns will work alongside Special Agents, with responsibilities and learning opportunities varying based on current investigations and the needs within the respective divisions. Potential activities include:
- Observing investigative operations in both office and field settings.
- Participating in surveillance and investigative support activities.
- Reviewing and organizing case files, reports, and video evidence.
- Assisting with administrative and project-based tasks.
Special Focus for Cyber Squad Interns:
Interns assigned to the Cyber Squad will receive exposure to:
- Various types of cyber-related criminal investigations.
- Cryptocurrency tracing.
- Collection and preservation of digital and non-digital evidence.
- Cybercrime research.
- Public awareness, education, intelligence sharing, support, and training.
- Gaining an understanding of how the Cyber Squad investigates complex technology-facilitated crimes and supports TBI Special Agents and other federal, state, and local law enforcement partners across Tennessee.
This internship provides students with the unique opportunity to learn directly from experienced Special Agents and professional staff, contributing to real-world investigative work that supports law enforcement partners and public safety across Tennessee.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Open to qualified college juniors, seniors, or those pursuing post-graduate education.
- Criminal Background Check: This position requires a criminal background check. Applicants may be required to provide information about their criminal history to be considered for this position.
