Job Title: TBI 2026 West Region Drug Investigations Internship

Employer: Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI)

Division: Drug Investigations Division

Location: Memphis, TN

Salary: School Credit

Program Duration: 10-week summer program, June 1, 2026 – August 7, 2026

Who We Are:

At the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), the slogan “That Guilt Shall Not Escape Nor Innocence Suffer” is more than just words; it’s a profound promise to the people of Tennessee. As the state’s lead law enforcement agency, TBI employees daily serve the Volunteer State with unwavering professionalism and passion. The agency deeply values truth, bravery, and integrity, playing a crucial role in making Tennessee an even better place to live.

Who You Make a Difference:

An internship at TBI offers qualified college and post-graduate students an invaluable, inside look at the TBI’s critical mission and extensive work across the state. While not a guarantee of future employment, this internship provides students from diverse backgrounds a broad and comprehensive understanding of what it takes to fulfill TBI’s unique role within Tennessee’s criminal justice system.

Job Overview & Work Activities:

The TBI Summer Internship Program delivers a unique, hands-on experience for college students, working directly with Special Agents and professional staff within the TBI office. This opportunity allows interns to learn directly from experienced professionals while contributing to real-world investigative work that significantly supports law enforcement partners and public safety throughout Tennessee.

Specifically, within the Drug Investigations Division, interns will engage in job-shadowing. This provides a first-hand introduction to how Special Agents collaborate with local, state, and federal partners, including agencies such as the DEA, FBI, and U.S. Attorney’s Offices, to effectively combat drug issues across Tennessee.

The primary focus of the Drug Investigation Division is to disrupt illicit drug supply chains through:

  • Targeted investigations
  • Surveillance operations
  • Dismantling trafficking organizations

Interns should be aware that these operations are inherently sensitive and often covert to protect ongoing efforts. Due to the dynamic and ongoing nature of criminal activity, work hours are described as flexible and often unanticipated.

Requirements & Considerations:

  • This position requires a criminal background check. Applicants may be required to provide information about their criminal history to be considered for this position.
  • The internship is designed for qualified college and post-graduate students.

Equal Employment Opportunity Statement:

Pursuant to the State of Tennessee’s Workplace Discrimination and Harassment policy, the State is firmly committed to the principle of fair and equal employment opportunities for its citizens and strives to protect the rights and opportunities of all people to seek, obtain, and hold employment without being subjected to illegal discrimination and harassment in the workplace. It is the State’s policy to provide an environment free of discrimination and harassment of an individual because of that person’s race, color, national origin, age (40 and over), sex, pregnancy, religion, creed, disability, veteran’s status or any other category protected by state and/or federal civil rights laws.
