2027 Tax Intern – Holland | Hungerford

The Tone:
This is an internship at Hungerford, located in Holland, MI, specifically for the Winter Semester of February-April 2027. Hungerford is a firm dedicated to providing comprehensive tax services to a diverse clientele. Interns play a vital role in supporting the firm’s tax team, gaining hands-on experience in tax preparation and firm operations. This position offers a structured environment where interns are guided by experienced professionals, ensuring a valuable learning experience and direct contribution to the firm’s service delivery.

• Mission: To gain practical experience in tax preparation and accounting support functions, while contributing to the efficient and accurate delivery of tax services for individuals and potentially businesses during the winter semester.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Prepare Returns: Prepare primarily 1040 individual income tax returns, and actively seek opportunities to work on more complex 1040 returns, personal property tax returns, or business/partnership returns as these become available throughout the internship period.
• Assist with Documents: Provide direct assistance in preparing critical financial documents such as trial balances, working papers, and depreciation schedules, utilizing standard office software like Microsoft Excel and Word.
• Engage with Firm: Proactively become familiar and actively engaged with the firm’s personnel across various teams, understanding its operational policies and established procedures.
• Understand Ethics: Develop a foundational understanding and adherence to the crucial rules, regulations, and comprehensive code of ethics set forth by the AICPA, applying these principles in daily tasks.
• Develop Professionally: Actively participate in a supportive environment designed for learning, ensuring a valuable and enjoyable experience while developing foundational professional skills and insights into the accounting field.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level. Undergraduate student, Graduate student, Non-traditional student, or recent Alumni who are actively studying or have completed studies in accounting or a closely related financial field.
• Experience: No specific prior professional experience in tax preparation or accounting is explicitly required, as this internship is designed to provide foundational exposure and learning opportunities for students and recent graduates.
• Skills: Demonstrated proficiency in using Microsoft Excel and Word for data entry and document preparation; a developing understanding of individual income tax return preparation principles; the ability to assist in compiling financial working papers; and a commitment to understanding and upholding professional ethical standards.
• Bonus: A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is preferred for all applicants. Hungerford also gladly welcomes CPT/OPT candidates to apply for this internship opportunity, and actively encourages students to coordinate with their academic institutions to seek course credit for their participation.
