Job Title: Tax Intern, Business Incentives Group

BDO’s Business Incentives Group (“BIG”) is a rapidly expanding national consulting practice within the firm. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a premiere consulting environment.

About the Business Incentives Group (BIG)

BIG’s core mission aligns with BDO’s purpose of helping people thrive every day. The group assists companies and individuals in identifying and claiming government incentives designed to promote innovation, economic growth, and job creation in the U.S. A primary focus is on incentives like the Research & Development (R&D) Tax Credit.

Clients are leaders in innovation across diverse industries, including technology, manufacturing, life sciences, healthcare, retail, consumer products, and natural resources. Interns will collaborate with BDO professionals across all business lines, as well as with client innovation leaders in tax, accounting, finance, engineering, software, manufacturing, scientific, and medical R&D-related departments.

BIG’s Mission and Intern Development

  • Short-term mission: To efficiently and effectively help clients identify, document, and support various government incentives during examination by tax authorities.
  • Longer-term goal: To become trusted advisors by developing a deep understanding of clients’ businesses, operations, and drivers, and identifying how BDO can help them achieve their goals.
  • Intern Development: The internship is designed to provide first-hand experience in becoming a trusted advisor, emphasizing the importance and responsibilities of the role, and offering training and opportunities to develop professional service skills.

Role of a Tax Intern, Business Incentives Group

BIG Interns are encouraged to pursue opportunities that enhance their skills in all aspects of professional service, including:

Key Responsibilities (Job Duties)

  • Assists in the execution of multiple client engagements.
  • Collaborates with other BIG professionals in various business aspects, including innovating, developing, and implementing improved strategies and processes for services, as well as marketing.
  • Establishes effective working relationships directly with BIG professionals and other BDO employees.
  • Contributes to the development of personal technical acumen and BIG’s market prominence.
  • Assists in business development research and identification of opportunities for new and existing clients.
  • Contributes to, supports, and enhances the culture of BIG, local offices, and BDO as a globally leading professional services firm.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Education

  • Required: Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program.
  • Preferred: Focus in Accounting, Finance, Computer Science, Engineering, Data Analytics, Communications, or Law.

Experience

  • Preferred: Leadership experience.

Software

  • Preferred: Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Word.

Other Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and basic research skills.
  • Solid organizational skills, with a particular ability to meet project deadlines and focus on details.
  • Ability to successfully multi-task while working independently or within a group environment.
  • Ability to work in a deadline-driven environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Able to interact professionally with people at all organizational levels of the firm.
  • Desire to understand the “why” behind tasks and actively seek learning opportunities.
  • Demonstrates interest in performing self-study to further develop technical competency and knowledge of issues impacting various incentives.

Salary Information

Individual salaries are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and geography. The hourly ranges are as follows:

  • California: $40.00/hr – $45.00/hr
  • Colorado: $35.00/hr – $39.00/hr
  • Illinois: $36.00/hr – $40.00/hr
  • Maryland: $34.00/hr – $38.00/hr
  • Massachusetts: $36.00/hr – $40.00/hr
  • Minnesota: $32.00/hr – $36.00/hr
  • New Jersey: $38.00/hr – $42.00/hr
  • NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $36.00/hr – $40.00/hr
  • Ohio: $33.00/hr – $37.00/hr
  • Washington: $37.00/hr – $38.00/hr
  • Washington DC: $34.00/hr – $38.00/hr
