Job Description: Tax Intern (State & Local Tax Practice)

KPMG is seeking a Tax Intern to join its State & Local Tax (SALT) practice. The intern will be an integral part of a multi-disciplinary team focusing on transaction-related tax services for buyers and sellers.

Responsibilities:

• Work as part of a team delivering transaction-related tax due diligence and acquisition structuring services.
• Advise private equity and commercial clients on transaction-related SALT matters in mergers and acquisitions (M&A).
• Identify and estimate historical and current SALT exposures related to income tax, indirect taxes (sales/use tax, gross receipts tax, franchise tax, employment tax), and unclaimed property.
• Identify SALT opportunities related to acquisition or disposition structuring.
• Research tax laws and form positions on their application to specific transaction details.
• Stay current on state and local tax legislative, judicial, and administrative developments.
• Identify and support post-transaction integration opportunities and develop new client relationships.
• Draft due diligence reports and memorandums outlining risk areas and legal applications.
• Review and draft comments on transaction documents (purchase agreements, acquisition structure decks, 100-Day Plans, etc.).
• Develop skills in key technologies like AI, Alteryx, and Power BI.
• Maintain integrity, professionalism, and personal responsibility within KPMG’s work environment.

Qualifications:

• Enrollment in an accredited college or university pursuing a JD or equivalent.
• Additional academic credits required upon internship completion before degree attainment and/or CPA eligibility.
• Preferred GPA of 3.0 or above.
• Strong tax research skills.
• Demonstrated commitment to quality service, strong technical aptitude, critical thinking skills, and proficiency in MS Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook).
• Excellent communication, organizational, time management, and leadership skills; ability to work as a flexible and adaptable team player.
• Ability to learn and use technologies such as AI, Alteryx, and Power BI.
• Must reside within a commutable distance to the office and be able to travel to work locations using personal transportation.
• Ability to travel to client premises as needed, sometimes with short notice.
• Authorization to work in the U.S. without employment-based visa sponsorship (no sponsorship available).
