Accountant, Sales Tax | Pilot Flying J
The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Pilot Company, located in Knoxville, TN or the surrounding communities. Pilot Company is an industry-leading network of travel centers with over 750 retail and fueling locations across 44 states and six Canadian provinces, supported by more than 30,000 team members. As an Accountant, Sales Tax, you will play a vital role in ensuring the company’s financial compliance by accurately preparing and filing monthly, quarterly, and annual sales tax returns, contributing directly to the financial integrity of a large and complex organization dedicated to fueling people and keeping North America moving.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Tax Return Preparation: Prepare and meticulously file state and local sales tax returns, ensuring accuracy and adherence to all deadlines and regulations.
• Report Generation: Generate comprehensive supporting reports that validate tax filings and provide necessary data for internal and external stakeholders.
• Internal Customer Service: Provide dedicated internal customer service, assisting team members with W-9 and exemption certificate completion, as well as conducting thorough contract and invoice reviews.
• Audit Support: Actively assist with sales tax audits, providing required documentation and support to ensure smooth and successful audit processes.
• Operational Compliance: Model behaviors that support the company’s common purpose and ensure all work activities are consistently in compliance with established rules, regulations, policies, and procedures, completing other duties as assigned to support department goals.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Requires a Bachelor’s degree. This position is suitable for an early career professional seeking to develop expertise in sales tax.
• Experience: A minimum of one year of sales and use tax return preparation experience is preferred, demonstrating foundational knowledge and practical skills in tax compliance.
• Skills: Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office is required. Critical soft skills include excellent analytical capabilities for data interpretation, strong critical thinking to navigate complex tax scenarios, and superior organizational skills to manage multiple filings and deadlines. The role demands strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy in all tax documents, along with excellent written and verbal communication skills for clear internal and external interactions. Candidates must also demonstrate the ability to work effectively with minimal supervision, efficiently set priorities, skillfully multitask, consistently meet deadlines, and proactively resolve problems with a high sense of urgency.
• Bonus: Basic accounting experience is preferred, which would be beneficial for understanding underlying financial principles. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification is also preferred, indicating an advanced level of professional expertise and commitment.
