Job Description: Summer Transportation Internship
This is a paid, full-time (40 hours/week) summer internship within BNSF Railway’s Transportation Department. The internship runs from June 9th, 2025, to August 1st, 2025, with 21 positions available. The monthly salary is $4,785.
Program Overview:
The internship offers a hands-on experience in the operational core of rail transportation. Interns will gain practical experience in areas such as:
• Logistics: Understanding and managing the flow of goods.
• Scheduling: Participating in the planning and coordination of train movements.
• Safety Management: Learning about and contributing to safe railroad operations.
Interns will work closely with experienced professionals on real-world projects, enhancing their skills and knowledge. Successful interns may be offered full-time Management Trainee positions upon graduation.
Work Environment & Requirements:
This is a 24/7 operations environment, requiring flexibility with work schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Travel and relocation are required for the summer, with the possibility of assignment to various locations (Belen, NM; Corwith, IL; Denver, CO; Fort Worth, TX; Houston, TX; Kansas City, KS; Lincoln, NE; Minneapolis, MN; San Bernardino, CA; Vancouver, WA; Whitefish, MT) based on business needs. Reliable transportation is a must.
The work environment is a mix of indoor office and outdoor settings, with potential exposure to diverse and extreme weather conditions. Personal protective equipment (PPE), including a hard hat, safety glasses, and gloves, is provided.
Key Responsibilities:
• Learning the logistics of railroad operations through a challenging program.
• Managing railroad terminal operations, working on logistics projects, and assisting supervisors.
• Interacting with other operating departments (Mechanical and Engineering).
• Demonstrating leadership, teamwork, communication, adaptability, and resilience.
Qualifications:
• Basic Qualifications:
• Legally authorized to work in the U.S. (no sponsorship available).
• At least 18 years old upon hire.
• Ability to distinguish colors (red, blue, green, yellow, and clear) and hear auditory signals.
• Capable of working in a 24/7 environment and outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Ability to climb ladders and navigate uneven surfaces.
• Willingness to relocate anywhere within the BNSF Railway operating system for the summer.
• Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Logistics, Transportation, Supply Chain Management, Business, Communications, Technical, or a similar field from an accredited university.
• Minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA.
• Less than three years of professional work experience (excluding internships).
• Access to reliable transportation.
• Preferred Qualifications:
• Prior internship or relevant work experience (less than 3 years).
• Leadership experience in campus, community, or extracurricular organizations.
