Summer Research Internship – Molecular Diagnostics (2026)
Join Bio-Techne, a company with a powerful and positive purpose of enabling cutting-edge research in Life Sciences and Clinical Diagnostics. This internship is with Asuragen, a Bio-Techne brand, specializing in launching innovative molecular diagnostic products as both diagnostic kits for international distribution and laboratory developed tests.
Asuragen’s molecular diagnostics portfolio currently influences over 15 million patient management decisions a year, providing tools for researchers to further treat and prevent disease worldwide.
About the Internship Program
All internship positions are designed to give college students an opportunity to apply techniques learned in an academic setting while obtaining new skills. This is a paid internship offering full-time hours during the summer months. All interns are required to conclude the program by giving a formal presentation on their work. Please note that no relocation assistance is provided for the internship program.
The Opportunity
Asuragen is seeking an outstanding undergraduate (at least 4 semesters completed), recent graduates, and/or graduate students (master’s level) in the biological sciences for 2026 summer research internships focused on developing innovative nucleic acid technologies.
Pay Rate:
- Undergraduate Candidates: $18/hr
- Graduate Candidates: $24/hr
What You’ll Do & What We Offer
- Gain exposure to cutting-edge, applied scientific research, along with unique experiences from working in a scientific business focused on product development and research capabilities.
- Projects will advance molecular assays that can help diagnose disease and/or inform patient treatments, focusing on interrogating biomarkers with precision medicine applications.
- Each intern is assigned to a specific project and a scientific mentor. Projects may fall within molecular signatures for inherited disease, sensitive variant detection for minimum residual disease, or novel method development.
- Projects are appropriately scoped to produce 2-4 defined outcomes based on the intern’s level of expertise within the internship period.
- Technologies of interest will vary by project, but typically include DNA isolation, preparation, PCR enrichment, long-read Nanopore sequencing, reverse transcription, eukaryotic cell culture, capillary electrophoresis, quantitative or digital PCR.
- Projects may also include working with automated liquid handler robotics and python scripting to automate experimental setup and data interpretation, or ancillary orthogonal methods.
- Diagnostic disease applications span neurogenetics (e.g., myotonic dystrophy, fragile X, autism spectrum disorder), oncology (liquid and solid tumors), and inherited disease screening (e.g., genetic variants associated with cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy, hemoglobinopathy).
- Internships span a minimum of 8-10 weeks (May-August), with expectations of 40 working hours/week. Options to start early or extend beyond the summer may be considered.
- Internships include networking opportunities, social events, and workshops. Interns may shadow key functional roles, contribute to conference abstract/poster preparation, and present internally during team meetings or journal clubs.
Who You Are & What You Bring
We are looking for academically accomplished, highly motivated, and collaborative individuals with a strong interest in research and development in a diagnostic industry setting.
Skills & Experience:
- Previous Laboratory Experience: Preferred, particularly experience with molecular techniques such as DNA or RNA isolation, PCR, capillary electrophoresis, and/or sequencing (short- or long-read next-generation sequencing).
- Communication: Strong interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication, are essential for this collaborative work environment.
- Technical Aptitude: Eagerness to work independently towards experimental planning, prioritization, execution, data review, and troubleshooting within a nimble, fast-paced project team advancing product development goals within project deadlines. Must be able to manage multiple tasks and maintain a sense of urgency.
- Tools: Proficiency with routine communication, data analysis, management, and presentation tools including Microsoft suite (Excel, Word, Teams, SharePoint, OneNote, PowerPoint) is expected. Exposure to data analysis platforms such as R, Python, JMP to analyze large scale data is ideal but not expected.
- Skills for Success: Problem-solving, personable, credible, accountable, adaptable, high emotional intelligence.
Program Requirements:
- Education: Must be pursuing a B.S or M.S degree in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, or similar fields relevant to the internship, or be a recent graduate.
- Must have completed (at minimum) the sophomore year of college.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction and able to work full-time during the duration of the internship program.
