Summer Recruitment – Actuarial Intern (MD/DC/VA)

CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield is offering a year-round internship opportunity within their Finance – Actuary department. This role provides an excellent chance for students to gain hands-on experience in actuarial Medicare work and develop a deep understanding of the healthcare industry. The intern will have the opportunity to apply academic knowledge in a business environment, fostering valuable connections across various levels of management within the organization.

Commitment: This is a year-round internship. The ideal candidate can commit to working throughout the year:

• Spring/Fall: Minimum 15-20 hours per week
• Summer: 30-40 hours per week

The anticipated start date for the Summer Cohort is late May or early June.

Principle Accountabilities

As an Actuarial Intern, you will work closely with an actuarial team member and be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:

• Gathering data from different internal and external sources, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methods.
• Applying analytical skills to present findings effectively through pivot tables, visualizations, and narrative summaries.
• Preparing and/or maintaining comprehensive documentation of work.
• Assisting in the updating of the Medicare Advantage pricing model.
• Contributing to Medicare Advantage financial forecasting efforts.
• Aiding in the preparation of accurate and timely trend analyses.
• Supporting value-based contract review and analyses.
• Assisting with risk adjustment analytics.
• Performing other duties as assigned to support the actuarial team.

Qualifications

Education/Experience

This position is open to individuals working towards a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited College or University. We are specifically looking for:

• A rising Senior Undergraduate student OR
• A Master’s level student graduating in May 2027.

Targeted Majors: Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Finance, or related degrees.

Academic Requirement: A cumulative GPA of 3.25 or above is required.

Actuarial Exams: Passage of one and/or two SOA (Society of Actuaries) actuarial exams is strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities (KSAs)

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment to accomplish assigned tasks with a positive attitude.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access).
• Experience using SQL or Python is highly desirable.
• Ability to effectively interface with and establish/maintain strong working relationships with internal staff and departments.

Salary Range

The anticipated annual salary range for this position is $18,720 – $26,000. Please note that all intern positions will be paid hourly, and this range represents an annual equivalent rate.
