About Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach (APILO)

API Legal Outreach (APILO) stands as the largest social justice legal organization dedicated to serving the Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, and immigrant communities across the Greater Bay Area and the Central Valley. Founded in 1975, APILO is a growing community-based organization committed to providing culturally competent and linguistically appropriate direct legal services. Our mission focuses on assisting the most marginalized segments of our community, including low-income women, seniors, immigrants, and youth.

With offices located in Oakland and San Francisco, APILO’s extensive work addresses critical social justice issues through various practice areas: Gender-based Violence, Immigration and Immigrant Rights, Disability Rights, Senior Law and Elder Abuse, Anti-Human Trafficking, Youth Violence Prevention, Anti-API Hate Violence, the preservation of affordable housing and small businesses, and other emergent community needs.

Position: Summer Law Clerk

APILO is actively seeking passionate and dedicated Summer Law Clerks to join our team. This role is ideal for individuals committed to providing culturally competent legal services to vulnerable, low-income community members. Law clerks will have the opportunity to work within one or more of APILO’s critical practice areas.

  • Elder Law
  • Domestic Violence/Family Law
  • Anti-API Hate

Key Responsibilities:

The Summer Law Clerk will play a crucial role in supporting APILO’s legal services and community initiatives. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting with the provision of direct legal representation to low-income community members, working under the close supervision of experienced legal staff.
  • Conducting comprehensive legal research and drafting precise legal memoranda to support attorneys in thorough case preparation.
  • Drafting and reviewing various legal documents, ensuring accuracy and adherence to legal standards, all under the supervision of licensed attorneys.
  • Assisting with the initial client intake process, which involves gathering preliminary information from potential clients through both telephone and in-person interviews.
  • Supporting community education initiatives by helping to prepare informative materials and presentations, and actively attending outreach events.
  • Attending meetings and collaborating effectively with community partners, ensuring that APILO’s legal perspective and advocacy are well-represented.
  • Attending court hearings, client meetings, and other relevant events crucial for client casework and professional development.

Compensation & Schedule:

  • Stipend: $1000 per week
  • Hours: 40 hours per week
  • Duration: 10 Weeks
  • Schedule: 5 days per week (typically Monday to Friday)
  • Dates: May 26 to August 7th (2025 or 2026, depending on the application cycle)
  • FLSA Status: Internship

Location & Reporting:

  • Location: In-office, with a flexible work environment.
  • Reports to: Supervising Attorney

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, an accredited law school.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct thorough legal research and produce clear, concise legal memoranda or other legal documents.
  • Demonstrated passion for or experience advocating for underserved communities.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a multicultural team and adapt to the dynamic nature of legal casework.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual and bicultural skills relevant to low-income communities, especially proficiency in API languages or Spanish.
  • Working knowledge of Legal Server or other case management software.
