Job Description: Summer Internship – Transportation Department

This is a paid, full-time (40 hours/week) summer internship (June 9, 2025 – August 1, 2025) within BNSF Railway’s Transportation Department. There are 21 positions available, with a monthly salary of $4,785. The internship offers a hands-on experience in the operational core of rail transportation, encompassing logistics, scheduling, and safety management.

Key Responsibilities:

• Spend the summer on an assigned division (determined before the start date) learning the logistics of railroad operations in a fast-paced environment.
• Gain experience in managing railroad terminal operations, working on logistics projects, and assisting supervisors with managing train crews.
• Interact with other operating departments (Mechanical and Engineering) to gain a broader understanding of field operations and supervisory roles.
• Develop and utilize leadership, teamwork, communication, adaptability, and resilience skills to meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.

Work Environment:

The internship involves a mix of indoor office and outdoor work in a safety-sensitive environment. This includes exposure to various weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, sleet), uneven surfaces, loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery. Personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, gloves) is provided. The role requires flexibility regarding location, as assignments may vary based on business needs. Travel and relocation are required for the summer. A 24/7 operations environment necessitates on-call availability, overtime, nights, alternating shifts, weekends, and holidays.

Training:

The program begins with a two-day orientation in Fort Worth, Texas, including a company overview and networking opportunities. Following orientation, interns receive ongoing project support and practical field training at their assigned location.

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:
• Legally authorized to work in the United States (no sponsorship).
• At least 18 years old upon hire.
• Ability to distinguish colors (red, blue, green, yellow, clear) and hear/distinguish auditory signals.
• Capable of working in a 24/7 environment, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and working outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Ability to climb ladders, navigate uneven surfaces, and travel up to 25% of the time.
• Willingness to relocate anywhere within the BNSF Railway operating system (western 28 states) for the summer.
• Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Logistics, Transportation, Supply Chain Management, Business, Communications, Technical, or a similar field from an accredited university.
• Minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA.
• Less than three years of professional work experience (excluding internships, part-time jobs).
• Access to reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Prior internship experience or less than 3 years of work experience in a related field (Engineering, Supply Chain, Business, Logistics).
• Leadership experience in campus, community, or extracurricular organizations.

Additional Information:
