Summer Internship – Mechanical Department
This full-time summer internship offers a hands-on experience in railway mechanics and operations. Interns will work closely with experienced professionals, applying their academic knowledge to real-world challenges. The program focuses on enhancing technical skills, promoting professional development, and providing a comprehensive understanding of the railway industry.
Key Responsibilities
• Maintain locomotives and freight cars: Interns will contribute to the maintenance of BNSF’s extensive network of locomotives and freight cars.
• Safety: Interns will be responsible for the safety of their teams, adhering to BNSF’s rigorous safety protocols.
• Project Management: Interns will work on projects, managing communication with stakeholders and contributing to project completion.
• Shadowing and Field Experience: Interns will have the opportunity to shadow mechanical supervisors and craft employees, participate in projects, and assist in supervising, monitoring, and inspecting the maintenance and repair of locomotives and freight cars.
• Leadership and Teamwork: Interns will develop leadership skills, demonstrate teamwork, communicate effectively, adapt to changing environments, and exhibit resilience to overcome obstacles and meet deadlines.
Work Environment
• 24/7 Operations: This is a full-time position (minimum 40 hours per week) in a 24/7 operational environment, requiring flexibility to work on-call, overtime, nights, alternating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
• Travel and Relocation: Travel and relocation are required for the summer. Interns must be flexible with their location, as they may be moved depending on business needs. Reliable transportation to and from work is essential.
• Training: The internship begins with a two-day orientation in Fort Worth, Texas, providing an overview of the company and opportunities for networking with leaders. Following orientation, interns will receive ongoing project support and practical field training at their assigned location.
Qualifications
• Basic Qualifications:
• Legally authorized to work in the United States and at least 18 years old upon hire.
• No sponsorship required for work authorization.
• Capable of working in a 24/7 environment, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and can safely perform duties outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Able and willing to relocate anywhere on the BNSF Railway operating system (western 28 states) upon hire, for the summer, and travel to other locations as required.
• Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Engineering, Logistics, Transportation, Supply Chain Management, Automotive, Business, Technical, or a similar degree program from an accredited university.
• Maintain at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA.
• Less than three years of professional work experience (excluding internships, part-time jobs, or positions held while pursuing a degree).
• Access to reliable transportation for the duration of the internship.
• Preferred Qualifications:
• Prior internship experience or work experience in Engineering, Business, Automotive, or a related field.
• Held a leadership position in a campus, community, or extracurricular organization.
